On May 26, electric wave co-founder and CEO, Bhavish Aggarwal, shared a video announcing the start of construction on the electric vehicle maker’s battery cell manufacturing plant. When completed, the Gigafactory promises to be the largest cell manufacturing plant in the country. Ola Electric hopes to be a major player in the country’s EV sector with its existing range of electric scooters and even electric four-wheelers that are planned for the future.

Aggarwal took to Twitter, saying: “Work has started and is moving full speed ahead on our cellular gigafactory! It will be the largest cell factory in India and one of the largest in the world. And the centerpiece of #endICEage!
Ola Electric is among the select manufacturers that have been offered incentives under the government’s Rs 80,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme. The electric vehicle maker’s Gigafactory will be located in the Krishnagiri district of Tamil Nadu and will have a production capacity of 10 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of battery cells per year. Ola Electric’s battery cells will also be able to power electric vehicles and other battery solutions.

In addition to Ola Electric, Bangalore-based Reliance Industries and Log9 Material are also preparing to start local production of battery cells. Once domestic production reaches scale, it will help India grow its economy and reduce our reliance on cell imports. This would also reduce the logistics costs currently borne by Indian manufacturers.
