The first trailer for A24 troublemaker from director Julio Torres plays like a giddy dream of work-related stress, one you really want to pay attention to because it deals with someone else’s existential crisis.

troublemakerThe story of Alejandro Martínez (Torres), a talented and aspiring toymaker from El Salvador, heads to New York City hoping to make it big by making some of his most experimental and offbeat toys. Although Alejandro knows in his heart that he belongs in New York City pursuing his dreams, with his current work visa running out of time, there is a very solid possibility that he will be forced to leave the country, which puts him in a very difficult.

troublemakerThe first trailer only hints at how obnoxious and unhinged art world outcast Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton) is, but it’s enough to telegraph what kind of hell Alejandro is signing up for when he agrees to be his assistant so he can continue working on the EE. In exchange for helping Elizabeth curate an exhibition, she will sponsor him, making sure he gets to stay in New York. But the trailer also details many of the meaningless hoops Alejandro has to go through to make his situation work and highlights just how imaginatively troublemakergoes on to describe these all-too-real challenges immigrants face.

Curiously, troublemaker It doesn’t have a release date yet, but I hope this trailer is a sign that it won’t be long before it’s in theaters.
