A delegation of Shiv Sena lawmakers (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) met Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar on Thursday and urged him to expedite the hearing on the disqualification of 16 Shiv Sena MLAs from Eknath Shinde camp.

Calling talks with Mr. Narvekar held inside the Assembly premises “constructive”, Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve, leader of the opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Council, expressed confidence that Mr. Narvekar will make a decision soon. .

“The Supreme Court has ordered the Speaker to rule on the matter within a reasonable time. I don’t want to interpret what that time frame is… the Speaker has assured us that he will make a decision on this matter as soon as possible. The talks held today were satisfactory from our point of view,” said Mr. Danve.

On May 15, a delegation from the Shiv Sena (UBT) MLAs presented a 79-page memorandum to Vice President Narhari Zirwal at the Vidhan Bhavan as Mr. Narvekar was absent, on tour in the UK at the time.

Upon his return, Narvekar had said that he would not give in to any pressure from either party and made it clear that he would not unduly speed up or delay the process.

“All decisions will be made based on the law, constitutional principles and respecting the guidelines established in the SC ruling. A series of procedural aspects must be completed. As to what constitutes a ‘reasonable period of time’, we have to make a hindsight decision in this case. So I can’t say what a reasonable amount of time is. It could be 15 days, it could be more than that,” Narvekar said, when asked about the Thackeray group’s demands.
