In a shocking incident, a car crashes into the front gates of Downing Street, London, home to UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s office and residence. Police launched an investigation into the matter.
A video clip on social media shows a white passenger car with an open boot crashing into the Downing Street gates, which is significantly protected with barriers and a solid double-barreled black iron gate at all times.
Police officers arrested one person after the incident in London. “Around 4:20 p.m. [local time] a car collided with the gates on Downing Street in Whitehall,” the Metropolitan Police said in a statement.
“Armed officers arrested a man at the location on suspicion of criminal mischief and dangerous driving. There are no reports of injuries. Investigations are ongoing,” he added.
Officers could soon be seen shutting down their operation even as most of Whitehall, London’s main political center between Trafalgar Square and Parliament Square, was cordoned off.
Officials inside Downing Street have reportedly been asked to stay home and it is not yet known if Sunak was in his office at the time of the incident.
