Our workplace is the center of our life outside the home. We often spend more than two-thirds of our waking hours at work. S.Venkatesh, author and founder of Mainspring Advisors, shares three steps that can help us reach our full potential in the workplace.

  1. Become aware of your deepest motivations and purposes.
Self-awareness is key to beginning the journey towards achieving our full potential. We need to step back and reflect on our deeper motivations and purposes. What drives us? What gives us energy? What do we value and appreciate? How do they align with the work we do and the organization we work for?
  2. Develop Ownership Mindset
As we become more self-aware, we can approach our work more consciously, as a deliberate choice we have made, rather than as a helpless person dragged along by external circumstances. Once we adopt this mindset, we begin to take ownership of our decisions and do our best in the workplace.
  3. Focus on relationships
We are social animals. Almost all great endeavors have been made possible by collaboration between people. Relationship management, whether with clients, team members or counterparties, is key to reaching our full potential. Whether as a colleague or as a leader, we can strive to be authentic, listen to others with empathy and curiosity, seek feedback, and seek to contribute compassionately and generously.

Instead of focusing on external success and monetary rewards, focus on achieving excellence and impact. Rewards and results will follow automatically.
