Delhi wakes up to heavy rain, thunderstorm in a break from brutal heat

An update said the rainy condition will continue for another two hours.

New Delhi:

Delhi residents woke up to heavy rain and gusty winds this morning as the city enjoys a break from a brutal heat wave. The downpour impacted flights and uprooted trees in the city.

This morning a storm forecast was issued for the national capital and surrounding areas.

“A cluster of cloud patches is passing through Delhi-NCR. Under its influence: Thunderstorm/Dust storm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty wind speed 40-70 km/h would continue Delhi-NCR NCR and adjacent areas for the next 2 hours,” the India Meteorological Department tweeted.

An update said the rainy condition will continue for another two hours. They also tweeted the expected impact of the storm and suggested actions to avoid traffic jams or any adverse incidents.

Delhi airport said flight operations were affected and asked travelers to contact their airlines for updated information.

The mercury crossed the 45 degree Celsius mark earlier this week, skyrocketing demand for power in Delhi. The city won’t see such scorching heat until at least May 30, according to the weather department.

Delhi’s maximum temperature was set at 34.5 degrees Celsius yesterday, five points below normal.

A heat wave is declared when the maximum temperature reaches 40 degrees in the plains, 37 degrees in the coastal areas and 30 degrees in the mountainous regions with a deviation of at least 4.5 degrees.

North-west India is likely to experience below-normal maximum temperatures in May, the weather bureau predicted earlier this month. You are anticipating a normal monsoon rain this year, but a slight delay in its arrival.
